Cyberpunk 2077 can be a failure

Cyberpunk 2077 will be much bigger and better game than The Witcher 3 - at least that is the plan of the Polish developer, CD Projekt RED. However, there are many problems with Cyberpunk according to former employees of the studio.

Cyberpunk 2077 was announced back in 2012, with a great teaser trailer. Since then, CD Projekt RED did not share many details about the game. Yesterday we learnt the developer has a big plans for it, as the games is to be bigger and better than The Witcher 3. As it turns out, that brave promise can be an overstatement.

CD Projekt Red talks about Cyberpunk 2077 and the future of The Witcher series

Not long ago we've heard the news about CD Project RED losing important employees and we know that developing Cyberpunk 2077 is going pretty slowly. The rumors about big changes with the Cyberpunk 2077 project and reworking key elements of the game seem more and more real. What's more, the studio's official statement did not deny it.

New information comes from YouTube creator YongYea, who checked Glassdoor - a website where former employees can leave an opinion about their employer. According to him, the people who used to work at CD Projekt RED said pretty alarming stuff about Cyberpunk 2077. Of course it could be anybody as Glassdoor is free and accessible for everyone, but YongYea noticed the recurring details like vegetarian canteen, so he assumed it's real. He even got feedback from quoted ex-employees who confirmed their identity with photos and other information (or so he says).

Former employees talk about problems in CD Project RED

They did confirm the rumors about problems with the development process of Cyberpunk 2077, especially at the beginning, in 2012 and 2013. Apparently they joined the team after the release of the teaser trailer and they did nothing but work on The Witcher 3 and DLCs. Finally, after three years, they left the company, never having even participated in anything related to Cyberpunk 2077.

Allegedly, there were many ideas for this title - so much that in 2015 the game was still missing a solid concept for the gameplay. The team considered an online multiplayer game for four players, with a big open world and many RPG elements. All of this in FFP/TPP and with a story depending on the chosen sex of the protagonist.

The following year brought the last expansion for The Witcher 3 and the studio could dedicate itself fully to Cyberpunk 2077, yet the success of third Witcher provoked much more ambitious approach. The REDengine couldn't handle a multiplayer game, so it was modified. It turned out to be unnecessary, because in the meantime the project was changed once again and nobody told the programmers about this. One of the anonymous employees said the engine is being completely remodeled since the end of the last year and those things take a couple of years. Years, during which big part of the team cannot do anything without the new engine.

Right now it seems that Cyberpunk 2077 will not be ready before 2020. The question is - can CD Projekt RED handle their ambitions? They delivered one of the best RPGs in the history, but it doesn't mean they can do it again. Not with all these problems they (apparently) have. We wish them well, but at the same time we need new information about Cyberpunk 2077. The teaser trailer was published way to early. But it still looks great!
